"In a landmark move, ICANN has approved the introduction of a whole range of new names introduced to the Internet’s addressing system.
There are currently around 21 top level domains people can buy, starting witht he popular .com, .net and .org domains. With this new policy, it will be possible to create a slew of new domain extensions ? .shop, .hotels, .nyc (for New York City), or even .manila. Any group or entity can submit a proposal for a new top level name to be approved by ICANN."
위와 같이 기존의 .com, .net, .org를 완전히 풀어버리겠다는 의지인데요. 큰 회사들의 경우에는 아주 좋은 효과를 가져다 줄 것 같습니다. IBM이면 .ibm을 등록해서 각 사업부별로 도메인 이름을 정의하면 될테니까요.
혹시나 해서 놀새~가 해보고 싶은 도메인도 가능한가 했더니 세상에 등록비용이 50,000~100,000달러 정도가 될거라고 합니다. 개인이 하기엔 조금 무리가 있어보입니다.

위에서 언급된 것처럼 2009년 2분기부터 적용될 것 같군요.
